View Full Version : Wood fumes ?

When my trailer sits closed up, even for a few hours in the heat, there are some serious fumes in there when I open the doors. They are heavy enough that it will burn your eyes

It airs out really fast, but you can't go in there until it does. I had planned to set the thing up to sleep in, but I'd surely be dead after being in there over night.

Originally I thought this was just a "new trailer smell" that would go away after a while, but it's been almost a year.

Anybody else have problem with this ?

Will painting the walls stop this?

No such issues with my trailer unless I keep gas in there.

You can buy substantial vents from a RV supply place and install them yourself, but I would try to figure out what is making the smell first....

My trailer is not quite a year old and it has a "woody" smell when first opened. The odor is not strong - I believe it would pass a canary test.
They used the thin luan plywood on my trailer that I'd bet is imported. Meaning, who knows what the stuff is. Kilz Original (oil based) paint does a good job of sealing in odors so painting may work in your case.

After your next race, just leave your riding gear in it for a couple of weeks. The wood smell won't even be noticed :D

I'll agree with the "who knows what the stuff is". I've been working in a chemical plant for 27 years and I haven't run across vapors that burn my eyes as bad as this.

Five gallons of race gas and a pile of dirty moto gear couldn't touch this. It's not a stinky smell, it's fumes that just burn you eyes and nose. It goes way beyond "woody".

I do need to get a roof vent, that and paint may be all that's needed to tame these fumes.

You might try adding the vents that came on my Pace trailer. There are two of them; one at the front left side, and one on the rear right side. They allow air flow through the trailer when it is in movement.

Yeah, those too. I should have thought of all that stuff when I ordered it. I don't know what I was thinking. :(
